Presented from the palmar (anterior) aspect at the level of the metacarpal heads, the deep transverse metacarpal ligaments form stout transverse bands spanning between adjacent heads of the second through fifth metacarpals. Each ligament bridges the volar plates of the metacarpophalangeal joints, lying deep to the flexor tendon sheaths and superficial to the metacarpal necks, with the thumb metacarpal remaining anatomically separate and more mobile. Distally, the proximal phalanges and their bases sit inferior to the ligamentous plane, while proximally the metacarpal shafts align superiorly toward the carpal region. Tight anatomy. These deep transverse metacarpal ligaments matter because they limit splaying of the fingers and help maintain transverse stability across the metacarpophalangeal joints during power grip, while still permitting independent digital flexion and extension.
