Description

Positioned high on the posterior abdominal wall, the right and left kidneys sit lateral to the vertebral column in a symmetrical anterior view, with their superior poles approaching the costal margin and the lower ribs. Each renal hilum faces anteromedially toward the midline, where the renal pelvis narrows into the ureter that descends inferiorly toward the pelvis (urinary bladder not included). The vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs form the central axial landmark, while the ribs arch laterally and the superior aspect of the pelvic bone frames the inferior boundary of the field. Retroperitoneal anatomy, clearly oriented. This perspective helps teach why renal pain patterns and procedural access often reference bony landmarks rather than abdominal surface organs, since the kidneys lie behind the peritoneal cavity and are partially protected by the rib cage. It also supports clinical reasoning around ureteric colic: a calculus leaving the renal pelvis and entering the ureter can refer pain from flank toward the groin as the ureter courses inferiorly across the posterior abdominal wall. For interventions, an anterior orientation still reinforces the medial-facing hilum where the renal vessels and pelvis converge, a key concept before moving to axial CT correlation or posterior percutaneous approaches. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and urogenital blocks to anchor renal position and laterality, and in radiology teaching files to pair with coronal reformats that show kidneys, spine, and ribs in the same alignment. It also fits nephrology and urology publications that need a clean overview of renal and ureteral anatomy in an adult male without distracting visceral detail.
