Description
Centered in the lumbar column, the L2 vertebra is presented from an anterior perspective, with its vertebral body dominant and the shallow anterior concavity oriented toward the anterior longitudinal ligament. Superior and inferior endplates frame the body and abut the adjacent intervertebral discs, while the pedicles arise posterolaterally to lead into the vertebral arch. Transverse processes project laterally from the junction of pedicle and lamina, and the stacked alignment of neighboring lumbar vertebrae continues inferiorly toward the sacrum. Anterior views of L2 matter when you need to teach or plan around vertebral body anatomy rather than the posterior elements. Compression fractures in the thoracolumbar junction can extend into the upper lumbar levels, and appreciating the body’s anterior contour and endplate margins helps when describing wedge deformity, estimating loss of vertebral height, or correlating with CT and lateral radiographs. Landmarks at this level also orient clinicians during lateral or anterolateral approaches to the lumbar spine, where attention shifts from spinous processes to the vertebral bodies and discs.
