Description
Spanning the anterolateral trunk, the female external oblique muscle is rendered with its inferomedial fiber direction running from the lower ribs toward the linea alba and pubic region. Superolaterally, digitations interlock with serratus anterior along the rib cage, while the broad anterior aponeurosis contributes to the rectus sheath shown in blue over rectus abdominis. Inferiorly, the rolled free edge of the aponeurosis forms the inguinal ligament, extending from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle and defining the groin. Over the thorax, mammary gland lobules and ducts are included in situ, emphasizing their position superficial to pectoralis major and the anterior chest wall. Attention to the external oblique’s inferior margin matters because the inguinal ligament is a working landmark for both anatomy teaching and the operating room, framing the deep and superficial inguinal rings and the canal that transmits the round ligament of the uterus in women.
