Description
Centered on the visceral (inferior) surface of the male liver, the fossa for the gallbladder (fossa vesicae biliaris) appears as a shallow depression between the right lobe and quadrate lobe. Medially, the groove approaches the fissure for the ligamentum teres and the porta hepatis, while laterally it blends into the hepatic parenchyma of segment V. Superiorly the bed slopes into the substance of the liver, and inferiorly it opens toward the free margin where the fundus of the gallbladder would project. Close by, the right sagittal fissure and the adjacent hepatic impressions help orient the posterior view. Clear definition of the gallbladder bed matters when teaching surgical planes and when interpreting posterior surface anatomy during hepatobiliary surgery. During laparoscopic cholecystectomy, dissection off the cystic plate can expose small subvesical bile ducts (ducts of Luschka), a known source of postoperative bile leak when unrecognized. This posterior perspective also reinforces the relationship of the fossa to the porta hepatis, where the cystic duct joins the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct, a key setup for understanding Mirizzi syndrome and other causes of obstructive jaundice. Small space. Big consequences. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and surgical anatomy courses to anchor segmental liver topography and the concept of the gallbladder fossa as an intrahepatic bed rather than a separate capsule.
