Description
Anterior to the adult male liver, the convex diaphragmatic (anterosuperior) surface fills the field, with the right lobe dominating laterally and the left lobe tapering toward the midline beneath the diaphragm. A sharp inferior margin forms the anterior border, separating the superior diaphragmatic surface from the more inferior visceral surface that only begins to turn out of view. Along the superomedial aspect, the falciform ligament divides the right and left anatomical lobes and leads inferiorly toward the umbilical fissure, while the bare area sits more posterosuperiorly where hepatic parenchyma contacts the diaphragm without peritoneum. Hepatic veins course deep to this surface on their way to the inferior vena cava. This anterior perspective matters when you need to correlate surface anatomy with diaphragmatic motion and referred pain patterns, since stretching of Glisson’s capsule or irritation near the bare area can present as right shoulder pain via the phrenic nerve. It also supports procedural planning: the dome of the right lobe rises high under the ribs, so percutaneous access and subcostal incisions must respect pleural reflections and the close apposition of diaphragm, liver, and lower lung. Orientation on the diaphragmatic surface helps avoid misidentifying lesions that abut the capsule and appear subdiaphragmatic on ultrasound, CT, or MRI. Use this plate in gross anatomy and radiologic anatomy teaching to anchor terminology like anterosuperior, superior, and diaphragmatic surface, and to bridge to cross-sectional landmarks used in hepatobiliary imaging reports.
