Description
A human fetus at approximately 14 weeks of gestation lies in a flexed, curled posture within the translucent amniotic sac, seen in near-lateral profile against the vascularized uterine wall. The disproportionately large head dominates the body, with a smooth domed cranium, prominent frontal region, closed and fused eyelids, a formed external ear (auricle) and defined nose and lips. Both hands are brought together in front of the chest, with separated fingers already distinct, while the legs are drawn up in tight hip and knee flexion and one foot extends toward the viewer. The umbilical cord emerges from the anterior abdominal wall at the umbilicus and spirals posteriorly across the amniotic cavity toward the placental site, suspended in amniotic fluid. The early second trimester is when fetal morphology becomes reliably assessable on ultrasound: crown-rump length remains useful for dating, nuchal thickness and nasal bone have been evaluated, and limb, cranial and abdominal wall landmarks such as the cord insertion can be checked for defects. The flexed attitude and free movement seen here reflect an intact amniotic fluid volume and functioning musculoskeletal and neural development, while cord position and its three-vessel structure are routine points of examination. This gestational age is also the window in which chorionic villus sampling has passed and amniocentesis becomes appropriate, making the relationship between fetus, sac, fluid and uterine wall clinically pertinent.
