Description
A fetus at approximately 18 weeks of gestation lies in a flexed attitude within the intact amniotic sac, seen from the left side. The relatively large head with a smooth, still translucent scalp is bent toward the chest, the external ear is fully modelled, and the eyelids remain fused over the developing eyes. Both upper limbs are folded across the thorax with the hands closed into loose fists, while the lower limbs are drawn up so that the knees approach the abdomen and the plantar surfaces of the feet, with separated toes, face the observer. The umbilical cord emerges from the anterior abdominal wall at the umbilicus, its coiled vessels visible through the sheath, and passes toward the vascular placental disc applied to the reddish uterine wall behind the fetus, with clear amniotic fluid filling the sac.
