Description

A fetus of approximately 29 weeks' gestation lies in a flexed, head-down attitude within the transparent amniotic sac, seen in left lateral profile. Body proportions are those of the early third trimester: the head remains relatively large, but subcutaneous fat has begun to smooth the limbs and trunk, the skin has lost much of its earlier translucency, and fine scalp hair is present. One hand rests against the cheek near the closed eyelids, the fingers and nails fully formed, while the knees and hips are drawn up and the feet cross in the confined space. The external ear is fully modelled with a defined helix and lobule. Behind the fetus, the umbilical cord and its coiled vessels run toward the discoid placenta applied to the richly vascularised uterine wall, with amniotic fluid filling the surrounding cavity.
