Description
A fetus of approximately 30 weeks gestation lies curled in a flexed attitude within the amniotic sac, shown in left lateral profile with the head uppermost and the limbs drawn toward the trunk. The facial profile, external ear with a well formed auricle, fine scalp hair and plump subcutaneous contours of the shoulder and thigh are visible, along with the small hands held near the cord and the crossed lower legs and feet. The umbilical cord spirals from the anterior abdominal wall, its paired umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein distinguishable through the translucent Wharton's jelly, and inserts into the discoid placenta seen behind the fetus. The transparent amniotic membrane and surrounding amniotic fluid separate the fetus from the vascularised uterine wall that frames the composition.
