Description
A fetus at approximately 16 weeks of gestation lies curled in the physiological flexed posture within a translucent amniotic sac, seen in left lateral profile. The large domed cranium dominates the body proportions, with the facial profile showing a low nasal bridge, closed eyelids, and a formed external ear (auricle) set on the side of the head. The upper limbs are folded across the chest with the fingers separated and resting near the flexed knee, while the lower limbs are drawn up so that both feet with distinct toes lie close to the trunk. Surrounding the fetus, the thin amnion separates clear amniotic fluid from the vascularised uterine wall, and the umbilical region is faintly visible at the anterior abdominal wall. Sixteen weeks marks a point in the second trimester when biometry and morphology are routinely assessed, and this posture reflects the free fetal movement that amniotic fluid volume permits.
