Description

A fetus of approximately 27 weeks gestation lies in a flexed, head-down curled attitude within the intact amniotic sac, seen in lateral profile. The rounded cranial vault carries fine scalp hair, the eyelids remain fused-appearing and closed, and the external ear with a defined auricle and helix sits low against the side of the head. The upper limbs are drawn up so the hands with separated fingers rest near the mouth and chin, while the lower limbs are strongly flexed at hip and knee with the feet and toes brought toward the trunk. Surrounding the fetus, the translucent amniotic membrane and particulate amniotic fluid separate the body from the vascularised uterine wall, with the umbilical cord passing behind the trunk. At 27 weeks the fetus stands at the threshold of the third trimester, a period defined by rapid brain growth, subcutaneous fat deposition, developing surfactant production and increasingly regular cycles of fetal movement, breathing motions and sleep. This stage is central to counselling on preterm birth, neonatal viability and the neonatal intensive care course, and it is the reference anatomy for interpreting third-trimester ultrasound biometry, amniotic fluid volume assessment and presentation. Hand-to-mouth positioning and limb flexion illustrated here underlie normal fetal tone and the development of sucking and swallowing reflexes. The rendering suits obstetric and midwifery teaching, prenatal classes, week-by-week pregnancy atlases and patient-facing material explaining what the baby looks like and does in the seventh month. It also serves publishers, neonatology and embryology course content, and clinics needing consistent visual staging alongside companion images from earlier gestational weeks in the same series. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
