Description
A fetus at roughly 32 weeks of gestation lies curled in the amniotic cavity with the spine flexed, the head turned toward the viewer and the limbs drawn against the trunk. The discoid placenta is seen in section along the upper uterine wall, its chorionic plate carrying the umbilical vessels that converge into the umbilical cord; the cord coils loosely between the placental insertion and the fetal abdominal wall. Surface detail typical of the third trimester is visible: scalp hair, a defined external ear with formed helix and lobule, plump subcutaneous fat over the shoulders and thighs, and fully separated toes with nail beds on the foot brought up beside the face. The fetal hand rests near the mouth, and the smooth, richly vascularised uterine lining forms the surrounding chamber. By week 32 the fetus is gaining brown and white adipose tissue rapidly, alveolar development and surfactant production are advancing, and most infants born at this point survive with neonatal support, making the period a reference point for late preterm counselling. This stage also matters for obstetric assessment of fetal lie and presentation, growth surveillance by ultrasound biometry and estimated fetal weight, and evaluation of placental position and cord insertion before delivery planning.
