Description
Inferior inspection of the male liver centers on the visceral surface of the left lobe, where the gastric impression (impressio gastrica, fossa gastrica) forms a broad concavity. Medial to this depression lie the fissure for the ligamentum teres and the porta hepatis region, while the impression itself sits anteromedial to the esophageal area of the stomach and is bounded laterally by the sharp inferior margin of the left lobe. Posteriorly, the contour transitions toward the lesser omentum attachment line, the fissure for the ligamentum venosum, and the caudate lobe territory. Gastric relations are more than a surface curiosity. This fossa is created by apposition of the stomach against the liver and shifts with gastric distension, hepatomegaly, and left lobe configuration, a point that helps learners reconcile why the left hepatic lobe can appear to “mold” around adjacent hollow viscera on cross sectional imaging and at laparotomy. For surgeons approaching the lesser sac or performing a left hepatectomy, the gastric impression provides a reliable orienting landmark for the left lobe’s visceral anatomy and for appreciating how close the stomach lies to the hepatic parenchyma when mobilizing the left triangular ligament and dividing lesser omental attachments.
