Description
Jejunum loops occupy the central abdomen in lateral projection, draping inferior to the transverse colon and anterior to the posterior abdominal wall. Proximally, the segment continues from the duodenojejunal flexure at the ligament of Treitz, then courses distally toward ileal loops that tend to settle more inferiorly and to the right. Mesenteric attachment tethers the bowel posteromedially, allowing the free jejunal wall to fall more anterolaterally in the peritoneal cavity. Male body habitus is implied, but the relationships follow standard adult anatomy. Lateral orientation helps clarify how jejunal mobility depends on the root of the mesentery and why loops shift with position, distension, or adhesions after laparotomy. Clinically, this is the small-bowel segment most often sampled for mucosal biopsy in suspected celiac disease and is a common site of obstruction from postoperative bands that kink the proximal jejunum near its mesenteric border. Surgeons also rely on these proximal relationships during feeding jejunostomy placement and when identifying a jejunal limb in Roux-en-Y reconstruction. A clean way to teach it.
