Seen from the lateral aspect in an adult male, the proximal small intestine is centered on the jejunum (intestinum tenue, pars jejunalis), with the bowel loops arranged in stacked coils and their thick muscular wall giving a more robust contour than the adjacent ileum would. Along the outer convex border, the antimesenteric margin curves laterally, while the mesenteric attachment lies more medially, where mesenteric fat and vessels would approach the bowel. Superiorly the jejunum continues from the duodenojejunal flexure, and inferiorly it transitions toward ileal loops as it descends into the infracolic compartment.
