Description
Shown from the mediastinal (medial) aspect of the right lung, the lateral basal bronchopulmonary segment (segmentum basale laterale, S9) of the inferior lobe is isolated in color against adjacent parenchyma. Its diaphragmatic surface forms the inferior border, curving onto the base where it abuts the dome of the diaphragm, while the segment’s medial boundary lies toward the hilum and pulmonary ligament. The segment sits lateral to the basal medial segment (S7) and typically posterior to the anterior basal segment (S8), with intersegmental planes implied by the course of segmental veins. Segmental anatomy matters when you need to think beyond lobes. The medial view clarifies how S9 relates to the inferior pulmonary vein and the basal bronchi as they enter the lower lobe, which is the perspective surgeons and bronchoscopists mentally reconstruct when planning a right lower lobe segmentectomy or navigating to a peripheral lesion. This is also a common dependency zone for aspiration and postoperative atelectasis in supine patients, so the basal segment map is more than academic.
