Description
Curving along the inner contour of the male large intestine, the plicae semilunares coli form a repeating series of semilunar folds that project into the lumen between adjacent haustra. Their free margins run transversely and obliquely, with fold height and spacing varying across the circumference, producing a subtle asymmetry from one lateral wall to the other. Mucosa and submucosa compose the folds, while the taeniae coli lie externally and drive the segmental sacculation that the semilunar folds internally mirror. Orientation favors the colic wall, with the lateral flexure shifting the apparent midline of the rectal or distal colonic wall. For teaching, this morphology clarifies why the colonic lumen is not a smooth tube and why endoscopic navigation alternates between cresting folds and entering haustral recesses.
