Description
A translucent female torso is presented in left lateral profile, with the pelvic contents rendered opaque so the gravid uterus sits clearly within the bony pelvis. The uterine cavity contains a fetus of approximately eleven weeks' gestation enclosed in the amniotic sac, with the placenta established along the uterine wall and the umbilical cord connecting the two. The uterine fundus remains within the true pelvis and only slightly above the pelvic brim, consistent with the end of the first trimester, while the cervix and vagina continue inferiorly and the fallopian tube and ovary are visible at the upper uterine angle. Anteriorly the urinary bladder lies in contact with the lower uterine segment; posteriorly the rectum and sigmoid colon curve behind the uterus, and loops of small intestine are displaced superiorly. The lateral projection is the most informative angle for teaching first-trimester uterine growth and the crowding of neighbouring pelvic organs. Compression of the bladder by the enlarging uterus explains the urinary frequency reported early in pregnancy, while the posterior relationship with the rectosigmoid underlies constipation and pelvic pressure. At eleven weeks the fetus has completed organogenesis and moves into the growth phase, the interval when nuchal translucency measurement, crown-rump length dating and combined first-trimester screening are performed. The uterine, cervical and vaginal axes shown here also correspond to the planes used in transabdominal and transvaginal sonography. Suitable for obstetric and midwifery teaching, antenatal class handouts and week-by-week pregnancy education material for expectant parents, where the sequence of gestational stages benefits from a consistent viewpoint.
