Description
Anteriorly, the right ventricle (ventriculus dexter) forms most of the sternocostal surface in this transverse section of the heart, its crescent-shaped cavity wrapping around the more circular left ventricular lumen. The interventricular septum lies medial to the right ventricular free wall, which appears thinner than the left ventricular myocardium but still muscular, with coarse trabeculae carneae lining the chamber. Toward the anterosuperior aspect, the right ventricular outflow tract (infundibulum, conus arteriosus) leads toward the pulmonary valve region, while posteriorly the atrioventricular junction frames the expected position of the tricuspid valve apparatus. That difference in wall thickness is the teaching point: right ventricular myocardium reflects a low-pressure pulmonary circuit, so hypertrophy, dilatation, or septal flattening on cross-sectional imaging immediately suggests pressure or volume overload. This transverse perspective maps cleanly to axial CT and cardiac MRI, where you assess right ventricular size and morphology in pulmonary hypertension, acute pulmonary embolism with right heart strain, and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. Orientation matters. The right ventricle’s anterior location and its shared septum explain why septal shift can compromise left ventricular filling in acute cor pulmonale.
