Description
Anterior cardiac anatomy is centered on the right ventricle (ventriculus dexter), with the sternocostal surface occupying most of the field and meeting the anterior interventricular sulcus at its left, medial border. Superiorly, the right ventricle narrows into the conus arteriosus (infundibulum) toward the expected location of the pulmonary trunk, while its inferior margin approaches the acute border where the chamber meets the diaphragmatic surface. Lateral contouring corresponds to the right atrioventricular groove region, but the coronary arteries and cardiac veins that normally track these sulci are intentionally absent. Clean myocardial topography dominates. Stripping away the coronary circulation focuses attention on ventricular morphology and surface landmarks that guide orientation in surgery and cross sectional imaging, where vessels can distract from the underlying chamber geometry. The anterior wall of the right ventricle is the operative corridor for procedures such as right ventriculotomy for congenital outflow tract reconstruction (for example, tetralogy of Fallot repairs) and it is also the region prone to rupture after right ventricular infarction, often related to proximal right coronary artery occlusion even if the artery itself is not shown. This view also clarifies how the conus relates to the interventricular groove when teaching how septal vs free wall pathology can alter the apparent silhouette on echocardiography and CT. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and cardiothoracic modules to teach external cardiac landmarks without the visual noise of overlying vasculature, or in surgical atlases and patient education materials discussing anterior approaches to the right ventricular outflow tract.
