Description
Seen in right lateral aspect, the right ventricle forms the anterior, inferior portion of the cardiac mass, wrapping as a crescent around the more posterior, medial left ventricle (ventriculus sinister) when considered in cross-section. The anterior interventricular sulcus marks the boundary between chambers on the sternocostal surface, while the inferior (diaphragmatic) margin slopes posteriorly toward the base. Superiorly, the outflow portion (infundibulum, or conus arteriosus) leads toward the pulmonary trunk, and the atrioventricular junction sits more posterior and superior where the tricuspid valve communicates with the right atrium. A right-sided view is the clearest way to teach why the right ventricle is a low-pressure, high-compliance chamber with thin free wall compared with the left ventricle. It also frames clinical examination and intervention: the right ventricle lies immediately deep to the sternum, so anterior myocardial injury, right ventricular infarction with proximal right coronary artery occlusion, and pericardial effusion effects on filling can be discussed against an intuitive surface anatomy backdrop. Short axis imaging and operative exposure make more sense once you internalize that crescentic geometry. Shape matters. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and cardiothoracic blocks to anchor chamber orientation, and in echocardiography or cardiac CT/MRI teaching to relate a lateral external view to parasternal short-axis and subcostal windows. It also fits well in manuscripts and slide decks on right ventricular failure, pulmonary hypertension, and congenital heart disease pathways where chamber morphology drives physiology.
