Description
Viewed from the left lateral aspect, the left ventricle (ventriculus sinister) dominates the cardiac silhouette with its thick myocardial wall and conical profile tapering toward the apex, which lies inferiorly and leftward. Superior and slightly posterior to the ventricular body, the base of the heart is implied where the left atrium would sit, while the left ventricular outflow tract courses superomedially toward the aortic root. The interventricular septum forms the medial boundary of this chamber, separating it from the right ventricle, which would lie more anteriorly and medially and contribute less to the left lateral contour. A left lateral display is the cleanest way to teach why the left ventricle is built for systemic pressures: wall thickness, chamber geometry, and the long axis from base to apex become immediately legible. Clinically, that geometry matters when correlating hypertensive concentric left ventricular hypertrophy versus post myocardial infarction remodeling with apical aneurysm, both of which change the lateral contour and the relationship of the apex to the diaphragm.
