Description
Bisecting the male cranium in the sagittal plane, this section brings the cranial vault and facial skeleton into the same field, from frontal bone and cribriform plate superiorly and anteriorly to the occipital bone posteriorly. Midline landmarks include the sella turcica of the sphenoid with the pituitary fossa, the clivus sloping inferoposteriorly toward the foramen magnum region, and the nasal cavity inferior to the anterior cranial fossa. Anteriorly, the maxilla with dentition and the hard palate sit superior to the oral cavity, while the mandible forms the inferior jaw; laterally derived structures such as the zygomatic bone are referenced by their contribution to the midface but are only partially represented in a true midsagittal cut. Brain parenchyma occupies the cranial cavity, with the cerebrum superior, cerebellum posteroinferior, and brainstem continuing inferiorly toward the cervical spinal cord. For teaching and clinical orientation, a sagittal skull section is the fastest way to explain how the anterior cranial fossa relates to the nasal roof at the cribriform plate, a location implicated in cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea after trauma and a corridor for olfactory fibers. The sella turcica also anchors discussions of pituitary macroadenoma, transsphenoidal surgical access, and how sellar expansion can remodel surrounding sphenoid bone on imaging. Small distances matter here.
