Oriented in an anterior sectional plane, the left ventricular inlet is presented as the inflow tract immediately inferior to the mitral valve orifice (ostium atrioventriculare sinistrum). The mitral annulus defines the circumference of the atrioventricular opening, with the anterior and posterior mitral leaflets forming its valve margin and directing flow from the left atrium into the ventricular cavity. Just distal to the orifice, the trabeculated ventricular wall and the smoother inlet region are distinguishable, and the inflow tract lies posterior to the left ventricular outflow tract toward the aortic vestibule. Relationships matter.
