Description
Curving along the posterior membranous wall of the trachea, the trachealis muscle spans transversely between the free ends of adjacent C shaped tracheal cartilages. Smooth muscle fibers sit immediately anterior to the esophagus and posterior to the tracheal lumen, forming a dynamic band that narrows or widens the airway diameter. Laterally, its attachments anchor on the cartilaginous rings, while the midline portion remains membranous and compliant. Functionally, this is the adjustable segment of an otherwise rigid conduit, and it becomes clinically relevant any time posterior tracheal compliance matters.
