Seen from the posterior aspect, the dorsal arterial tree is organized around the descending thoracic aorta continuing as the abdominal aorta, positioned anterior to the vertebral column with paired posterior intercostal arteries and lumbar arteries coursing laterally along the ribs and posterior abdominal wall. Superiorly, the subclavian arteries give rise to the axillary and brachial arteries toward the upper limbs, while inferiorly the common iliac arteries bifurcate into internal and external iliac arteries at the pelvic brim. Cutaneous and muscular branches spread superficially across the back, with deeper segmental vessels tracking near the costovertebral angles and transverse processes. Spatial relationships read cleanly in this projection. Posterior vascular anatomy matters when you plan or interpret procedures that approach the thorax, retroperitoneum, or spine from behind, where segmental arteries can be injured or intentionally preserved. The posterior intercostal and lumbar arteries contribute radicular branches to the spinal cord circulation, and their relationship to the vertebral column underpins discussions of spinal cord ischemia during thoracoabdominal aortic repair or extensive posterior spinal instrumentation.
