Description
Running from the left ventricle into the thorax, the ascending aorta continues through the aortic arch and descends as the thoracic and abdominal aorta, giving rise to named arterial trunks that supply the head, viscera, and limbs in a female body outline. Superiorly, the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery course toward the neck and upper extremity, while intracranial branches form the arterial network supplying the brain. Inferior to the diaphragm, the abdominal aorta divides into the common iliac arteries, which continue as internal and external iliac arteries and then as femoral and popliteal arteries to the distal leg and foot. Smaller caliber vessels are implied distally as arterioles and terminal arterial branches. Arterial distribution is where clinicians anchor pulse examination, vascular access, and the pattern recognition behind ischemia. The relationship of the aortic arch to the carotid and subclavian origins explains why atherosclerotic disease or emboli can present as transient ischemic attack, stroke, or upper limb claudication depending on the involved branch. A long view of the lower-limb pathway also supports teaching of peripheral arterial disease, where inflow lesions at the aortoiliac level differ from femoropopliteal disease in symptoms, ankle brachial index findings, and revascularization planning. Pressure and flow matter here. Arteries are the high-pressure side of the circuit. Course directors can drop this plate into cardiovascular anatomy blocks, nursing physiology lectures, or board-style review content that contrasts arteries and veins by direction of flow, wall structure, and clinical exam landmarks.
