Description
Rendered in a full-body female figure, the arterial tree is centered on the heart and the ascending aorta, continuing through the aortic arch into the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid, and left subclavian arteries before descending as the thoracic and abdominal aorta. Superiorly, the common carotid arteries divide into internal and external carotid branches supplying the face and scalp, while intracranial branches form a dense cerebral network consistent with the circle of Willis territory. Inferiorly, the abdominal aorta gives rise to major visceral trunks and then bifurcates into the common iliac arteries, which continue as external iliac and femoral arteries into the thigh, leg, and foot with progressively smaller arterioles distally. Clear laterality is maintained, with paired vessels running bilaterally along the neck, upper limbs, and lower limbs. Clinical interpretation of systemic perfusion starts with these named conduits. Aortic coarctation, carotid stenosis at the bifurcation, and iliac or femoropopliteal atherosclerotic disease each produce characteristic downstream ischemia, and this whole-body map helps connect a lesion’s location to symptoms such as transient monocular blindness, claudication, or diminished distal pulses. For procedural planning, the iliac to femoral pathway mirrors common endovascular access routes used in angiography and stent delivery. Landmarks matter. Place this asset in undergraduate anatomy and physiology curricula when teaching systemic circulation beyond the schematic level, or in clinical education materials that link cardiovascular risk to organ-specific consequences.
