Description
Angled lateral visualization centers on the male fourth ribs (costae IV), highlighted against the remainder of the thoracic cage as they arc from the posterior thoracic vertebrae toward the anterior chest wall. Posteriorly, each rib head relates to the bodies of adjacent thoracic vertebrae at the costovertebral joints, and the rib tubercle sits lateral to the transverse process at the costotransverse joint. Along the midaxillary line the shaft shows its typical curvature before tapering anteromedially into the fourth costal cartilage, which continues to the sternum at the level of the sternal angle region, with intervertebral discs and the thoracolumbar transition visible inferiorly. Clean bony texture. Clear cartilage transition. Clinically, the fourth rib is a dependable surface landmark because its costal cartilage aligns closely with the T4–T5 plane (the transverse thoracic plane) used to teach mediastinal compartment boundaries and to orient interpretation of chest radiographs and CT. Its relationship to the pleura matters during intercostal nerve blocks and tube thoracostomy planning, where the neurovascular bundle tracks in the costal groove on the inferior border of the rib and guides needle placement just superior to the adjacent rib. Rib and vertebral articulations are also common pain generators after blunt trauma, with costovertebral sprain or fracture altering normal rib excursion.
