Oriented in lateral profile, the third rib (costa III) is singled out against the surrounding thoracic cage as it arcs from its posterior articulation with the thoracic vertebra toward the anterior chest wall. Posteriorly, its head relates to the vertebral bodies at the T2 to T3 level, while the tubercle sits just lateral to the transverse process at the costotransverse joint.
