Seen in lateral profile, the thoracic cage is dominated by the shafts of ribs 8 through 12 (costae spuriae), arcing anteroinferiorly from their posterior articulations with the thoracic vertebrae and tapering toward the anterolateral abdominal wall. Ribs 8 to 10 converge anteriorly into the costal margin via the shared costal cartilages that join the cartilage of rib 7, while ribs 11 and 12 end as floating ribs with no anterior cartilaginous attachment. Posteriorly, the heads and tubercles of the ribs align with the thoracic vertebral bodies and transverse processes, and the thoracic kyphosis transitions inferiorly toward the lumbar lordosis. That rib 7 cartilage junction matters because it defines the superior limit of the false rib costal arch and anchors the anterior continuity that surgeons and anesthetists rely on for surface orientation.
