Description
Prominent in this anterior thoracic view, the paired second ribs (costae II) arc inferolaterally from their posterior attachments at the thoracic vertebrae toward the manubrium and body of the sternum, with the osseous shaft transitioning anteriorly into the second costal cartilages. The costochondral junctions sit lateral to the sternal margin, while the costosternal articulations lie at the superior sternum near the sternal angle region. Superiorly, the clavicles span transversely above the first rib, framing the thoracic inlet; posteriorly, stacked thoracic vertebral bodies and pale intervertebral discs provide midline reference. Second-rib anatomy is a common landmark for counting ribs and intercostal spaces in physical examination and on chest radiographs, since the second costal cartilage aligns with the sternal angle and helps locate the second intercostal space. Small fractures of the second rib can signal higher-energy mechanisms and may coexist with upper thoracic injuries, while costochondral disruption at this level produces focal anterior chest wall pain that can mimic cardiopulmonary disease.
