Description
Anterior facial and cervical musculature is rendered with emphasis on the mentalis at the midline chin. Vertical fibers arise from the incisive fossa of the anterior mandible, just inferior to the mandibular incisors, then descend and converge into the dermis over the pogonion (bony chin prominence) where they blend with adjacent fibers of orbicularis oris and the depressor labii inferioris. Lateral to this focus, the masseter occupies the ramus and angle of the mandible, while superiorly the orbicularis oculi and perinasal muscles frame the orbit and nasal aperture; inferiorly the sternocleidomastoid and upper trapezius define the anterolateral and posterior neck contours. The auricle sits lateral to the parotidomasseteric region as an external landmark. Mentalis anatomy matters because subtle differences in its origin, thickness, and insertion directly affect lower lip posture and chin soft tissue contour, the same mechanics exploited during mentalis resuspension in submental approaches and during chin augmentation planning. A common teaching point is its relationship to the mental foramen and mental nerve branches, which are at risk during genioplasty, vestibular incisions, and implant placement, and whose injury can produce lower lip numbness or asymmetric chin dimpling. Small muscle, big consequence. Use this plate in head and neck anatomy courses to teach muscles of facial expression, in oral and maxillofacial surgery texts discussing vestibular approaches to the anterior mandible, or in aesthetic medicine and plastic surgery materials covering chin analysis, botulinum toxin injection patterns for mentalis hyperactivity (peau d’orange), and lower lip incompetence. It also supports patient education graphics for genioplasty and chin implant consent discussions. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
