Positioned in the midline of the anterior mandible, the mentalis is highlighted deep to the skin of the chin as a paired muscle mound that converges toward the pogonion. Its fibers arise from the incisive fossa of the mandible just inferior to the mandibular incisors and descend to insert into the dermis of the chin, lying inferior to the lower lip and anterior to the mental protuberance. Superior and slightly lateral to it, the orbicularis oris and depressor labii inferioris frame the lower oral fissure, while the depressor anguli oris sits more lateral and blends toward the modiolus.
