Proximally, the paired nerves converge at the optic chiasm on the ventral surface of the diencephalon, where nasal retinal fibers decussate and the optic tracts continue posterolaterally toward the lateral geniculate nuclei. Surrounding context in this plate includes the brainstem (midbrain, pons, medulla) and adjacent cranial nerve rootlets emerging from the ventral brainstem, arranged in their usual superior to inferior sequence.
