Transparent cranial and cervical tissues expose the major arterial inflow and venous drainage of the male head and neck, with the common carotid arteries ascending in the neck and bifurcating superiorly into internal and external carotid arteries near the angle of the mandible. Superiorly, the internal carotid courses deep and medial into the cranial cavity, while the external carotid remains more superficial and lateral, giving off facial and scalp branches along the maxilla, mandible, and temporal region. Within the skull, a dense field of smaller arteries, venules, and capillaries overlays the cerebral surface, tracking along the gyri and dipping toward sulci, with the brain’s convolutions faintly visible beneath. Contextual skeletal landmarks, including portions of the mandible, maxilla, and cervical vertebrae, anchor the vascular pathways in anatomical position. Clarity on carotid anatomy matters because so much acute pathology localizes here. The carotid bifurcation is the classic site for atherosclerotic plaque leading to internal carotid stenosis and embolic ischemic stroke, and this view makes the deep course of the internal carotid versus the more superficial external carotid intuitive at a glance. It also supports procedural planning and teaching for carotid endarterectomy and central line or catheter navigation, where adjacent cervical compartments and bony landmarks affect access and risk.
