Description
Arising at the medial canthus, the angular vein ascends along the side of the nasal bridge where the frontal process of the maxilla meets the nasal bone, then continues superiorly toward the supraorbital region. Inferiorly it receives tributaries from the lateral nasal and superior labial veins, marking the transition into the facial vein as it descends anteroinferior across the cheek. Deep to the superficial venous pathway, the bony orbit, nasal cavity margins, and anterior dentition provide fixed landmarks for orientation. Red arterial counterparts are plausibly included nearby, such as the angular artery as the terminal segment of the facial artery. Clinical teaching often centers on the angular vein because it forms a direct superficial to deep venous connection between the face and the orbit. Via the superior ophthalmic vein and cavernous sinus, infections from the nasal vestibule or upper lip can propagate intracranially, a pathway classically discussed as part of the facial danger triangle. Venous anatomy here also matters in periorbital trauma and during aesthetic injections around the nasolabial fold and medial canthus, where inadvertent intravascular placement can have orbital consequences. Facial anatomy courses, ENT teaching sets, and ophthalmology texts use this view to correlate surface landmarks with venous drainage routes and adjacent skeletal constraints. It also fits well in procedural training materials for fillers, rhinoplasty approaches near the nasal sidewall, and infection control discussions involving cavernous sinus thrombosis.
