Description
Lateral dissection of the male head and neck emphasizes the deep layer of the masseter (pars profunda) beneath a translucent skin and superficial muscular plane, with thick, vertically oriented fibers spanning from the medial aspect of the zygomatic arch to the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus and angle. Deep to the superficial masseter, the zygomaticomandibular (zygomaticomandibularis) component is suggested by fibers running more obliquely from the zygoma toward the anterior ramus and coronoid region. Adjacent bony landmarks include the maxilla, zygomatic bone, mandibular condyle and coronoid process, and the dental arches in occlusion. Powerful architecture. Because the deep masseter is harder to conceptualize than the superficial layer, this side view clarifies how the muscle’s deeper fibers act with temporalis to generate elevation and fine control of mandibular position during mastication, while also contributing to ipsilateral excursion when acting asymmetrically. Clinically, the deep belly is a common source of myofascial pain and hypertrophy in bruxism, and its relationship to the mandibular ramus matters in sagittal split ramus osteotomy planning, reduction of angle fractures, and placement of botulinum toxin for masseteric hypertrophy where diffusion can affect nearby parotid tissue or facial nerve branches. The masseteric nerve and vessels (V3 territory) are best understood in this layered context as they course to the deep surface of the muscle after passing through the mandibular notch.
