Description
Centered within the left middle mediastinum, the heart sits posterior to the sternum and costal cartilages and superior to the diaphragm, with its apex directed inferolaterally toward the left fifth intercostal space near the midclavicular line. A portion of the right atrium lies more anteriorly on the right, while the left ventricle forms most of the left cardiac border and the apex. The myocardium is rendered as the dominant tissue layer, and the organ’s oblique long axis is apparent within the thorax of an adult female body shown in anatomical position. An externalized cardiac view like this is a clean way to teach surface anatomy and clinically used landmarks without the distraction of other thoracic organs. It directly supports precordial auscultation mapping (aortic area at the right second intercostal space, pulmonic at the left second, tricuspid along the left lower sternal border, and mitral at the apex) and helps learners connect chamber dominance to palpable findings such as the point of maximal impulse.
