Description
Viewed from the inferior aspect, the male brain is presented with the brainstem and cerebellum posteriorly and the basal surface of the cerebral hemispheres anteriorly, while the circle of Willis and its contributing arteries course around the interpeduncular fossa and optic chiasm region. Yellow neural elements indicate cranial nerve pathways near the cavernous sinus and middle cranial fossa, where the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (V3) exits the cranial cavity via the foramen ovale. From V3, the meningeal branch (nervus spinosus) turns superiorly to re-enter the skull through the foramen spinosum, accompanying the middle meningeal artery to distribute sensory fibers to the dura mater of the middle cranial fossa. Spatially, this branch tracks lateral to the sella turcica and superior to the infratemporal fossa, then fans out across the tough meningeal layer. This view matters because the meningeal branch of the mandibular nerve is the principal sensory conduit from the middle fossa dura, and it travels with a vessel that surgeons and interventionalists target routinely. Irritation of dural afferents carried by nervus spinosus contributes to referred craniofacial pain patterns, and the close relationship to the middle meningeal artery frames clinical discussions of epidural hematoma after temporal bone trauma near the pterion.
