Description
Lateral anatomy of the posterior cranial fossa is rendered with emphasis on the meningeal branch of the vagus nerve (ramus meningeus nervi vagi) and its small recurrent fibers as they course back toward the dura mater. From the vagal rootlets and the inferior (nodose) ganglion near the jugular foramen, fine meningeal fibers pass superiorly and posteriorly, then pierce the dura along the petrous temporal bone and occipital region, running in close proximity to dural venous sinuses and adjacent arterial channels. The left cerebral hemisphere is shown externally, while the lower cranial nerve region anchors the viewer in the lateral skull base, where neural, venous (blue), and arterial (red) relationships can be read at a glance. Small, easy to miss branches. Clinically relevant ones. Pain referral from the posterior fossa dura is not solely trigeminal territory, and this plate helps teach that point with a structure learners often skip. The meningeal branch of the vagus contributes sensory innervation to dura in the posterior cranial fossa and can be implicated in postoperative occipital headache patterns after retrosigmoid craniotomy, mastoid or skull base exposure, and manipulation around the jugular foramen. Its relationship to the vagal ganglia and nearby lower cranial nerves also matters in lesion localization, where jugular foramen schwannomas, paragangliomas, or inflammatory processes may generate mixed deficits with atypical head pain.
