Shown in cross-section, the small intestine wall is organized into mucosa with villi, a supportive submucosa, and a muscularis externa with an inner stratum circulare and outer stratum longitudinale. Between those two smooth muscle coats lies the myenteric plexus (plexus myentericus, Auerbach), with ganglia and interconnecting nerve fibers arranged circumferentially and longitudinally. Deeper, within the tela submucosa, the submucosal plexus (plexus submucosus, Meissner) sits internal to the circular muscle, closely associated with submucosal vessels and glands. Arteries and veins course within the submucosa and along the outer surface under the serosa, providing clear landmarks for the neurovascular relationships. Emphasizing the enteric nervous system at the interface of circular and longitudinal muscle makes the motor role of the myenteric ganglia hard to miss. This is the anatomy you need when teaching why peristalsis fails in aganglionic disorders such as Hirschsprung disease (classically colonic, but the same plexus architecture applies throughout the gut) or when correlating postoperative ileus with disrupted neural reflexes and inflammatory mediators. The separation of Meissner and Auerbach plexuses also clarifies why secretomotor and vasomotor dysfunction can coexist with relatively preserved smooth muscle integrity. Small structures, big consequences. Ideal for histology and GI anatomy teaching in medical and dental curricula, as well as for gastroenterology texts explaining dysmotility, visceral pain pathways, and enteric neuropathies.
