Description
Cross-sectional bowel wall layers are rendered to orient the enteric nervous system within the small intestine, with mucosa and muscularis mucosae lining the lumen and the submucosa lying immediately deep to them. Within that submucosa, ganglia and interconnecting nerve fiber bundles form the submucosal (Meissner’s) plexus, shown as a meshwork running parallel to the mucosal surface. Deeper still, the circular and longitudinal layers of the muscularis externa frame the expected plane of the myenteric (Auerbach’s) plexus at their interface, even when the emphasis remains on the submucosal component. Orientation is everything. Meissner’s plexus is the teaching landmark for linking bowel wall histology to function, because its neurons coordinate mucosal secretion, local blood flow, and submucosal gland activity while integrating sensory input from the mucosa.
