Anteriorly, the left pulmonary venous drainage is traced as the anterior vein of the left lung courses from the anterior segments of the upper lobe toward the left atrium, running inferior to the left pulmonary artery and anterior to the left main bronchus at the hilum. Tributaries from the lingular region converge medially, then the vessel enlarges as it approaches the pericardium and the atrial wall. Nearby landmarks include the ascending aorta and aortic arch superior and medial to the pulmonary trunk, with coronary arteries and cardiac veins distributed over the epicardial surface. Blue venous channels contrast with red systemic arteries, clarifying the route back to the heart. For teaching, the anterior perspective helps sort out the classic hilar relationship on the left, where the pulmonary artery sits superior to the pulmonary veins, and the bronchus lies posterior. That arrangement matters during left upper lobectomy and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, when the surgeon isolates and divides the superior pulmonary vein and its anterior tributaries while avoiding injury to the pulmonary artery above and the bronchus behind.
