Arterial channels course anterior to the lateral malleolus toward the dorsum, then continue distally over the lateral aspect of the midfoot and forefoot, while superficial veins track in a parallel but more variable pattern within the subcutaneous tissues. Distal branches extend toward the toes, crossing the lateral border before turning medially into digital distributions. Clear landmarks. Understanding lateral foot vasculature matters when you need to anticipate where vessels run relative to palpable bony landmarks and common incision lines. The lateral malleolus and calcaneal region are frequent sites for trauma, hardware placement, and skin compromise, and the superficial venous network here is often used for cannulation but is also vulnerable to laceration. In patients with peripheral arterial disease or diabetes, distal perfusion to the toes and the reliability of collateral pathways become immediate concerns, and a lateral perspective helps correlate clinical examination with Doppler or angiographic findings.
