Description
Arising from the femoral artery in the proximal thigh, the deep femoral artery (profunda femoris) is seen coursing posterolaterally toward the posterior compartment, giving off perforating arteries that pass through adductor magnus to reach the hamstring musculature. In a posterior view of the male lower limb vasculature, the superficial femoral artery continues distally toward the adductor hiatus, while the profunda system supplies the bulk of the posterior thigh. Paired venae comitantes and larger superficial venous channels track alongside the arterial tree in predictable parallel paths. Orientation is clear. Medial and lateral branching patterns help anchor the vessel relationships across both thighs. Posterior visualization of the profunda femoris matters because it is the dominant arterial source to the posterior thigh and a major collateral pathway when the superficial femoral artery is stenosed or occluded, with perforators and anastomoses supporting distal perfusion around the knee. The perforating branches are also the vessels at risk during posterior and lateral approaches to the femur, proximal hamstring surgery, and deep thigh trauma, where bleeding can be brisk and difficult to control.
