Vastus Intermedius

Description

Centered on the anterior thigh, the vastus intermedius is shown as the deep quadriceps head lying directly on the anterior and lateral surfaces of the femoral shaft. Superficial to it sit rectus femoris centrally and the flanking vastus lateralis and vastus medialis, whose fibers converge inferiorly to form the quadriceps tendon over the patella and continue as the patellar ligament to the tibial tuberosity. Proximally, the vastus intermedius arises from the femoral diaphysis and intermuscular septa, with its muscle belly positioned inferior to the hip joint and superior to the knee, medial and lateral borders tucked beneath its neighboring vasti.
