Description
Arising from the incisive fossa on the anterior mandible, the mentalis muscle is rendered as a tight bundle of vertical fibers descending toward the skin of the chin, positioned inferior to the lower incisor roots and just lateral to the mandibular symphysis. A lateral skull context frames the region, so the mandibular body and alveolar process sit anterior to the oral cavity, with the maxillary and mandibular dentition aligned superior and posterior to the chin prominence. The overlying soft tissue contour at the mentum corresponds to where the mentalis inserts into the dermis, with fibers oriented superior to inferior to produce a characteristic chin pad. Functionally, mentalis elevates and protrudes the lower lip and wrinkles the chin, the classic pout expression, and it also supports the lower lip during speech and oral competence. This close-up anatomy matters in lower facial reconstruction and in dental and maxillofacial practice because the mentalis can be violated during vestibular or genioplasty approaches, leading to postoperative chin ptosis, lower lip incompetence, or an exaggerated mental crease. Botulinum toxin injection planning also benefits from this fiber-direction view, since the target lies superficial to the mandibular symphysis and too inferior a placement can miss the muscle belly.
