Description
Bisected male kidney in sectional cut, oriented to emphasize the anterior aspect of the renal hilum and the renal vein as it forms from multiple interlobar veins coursing between the renal pyramids within the renal columns. Radially, the cortical parenchyma caps the medulla, while the collecting system occupies the central sinus: minor calyces receive urine at the papillae, coalescing into major calyces and then the renal pelvis, which continues inferiorly as the ureter. Blue venous channels track from cortex and medulla toward the hilum, converging into a thicker renal vein adjacent to the renal artery at the medial border. Venous anatomy is not just academic. This view helps clarify how interlobar veins drain the medulla and how venous return parallels, but does not exactly mirror, the segmental arterial pattern, a distinction that matters when planning a partial nephrectomy, interpreting renal trauma, or following tumor extension toward the renal vein in renal cell carcinoma.
